We were called to Chelsea Building Products after an underground conductor’s failure caused a fire to erupt from both ends of a conduit bank. The incident damaged one of the 2500A service switchboards, along with the conductors for another 2500A service buried directly above it—both fed from a single utility transformer in the company’s substation. Working closely with the customer, DLCo, and CBP’s excavation contractor, we cleared the area and removed damaged conductors from fifteen 4″ conduits.
A crew of 6–9 worked 12–15 hours a day for seven straight days to restore service. The team installed approximately 1,200 feet of 4″ PVC conduit and pulled over a mile (5,760′) of 600MCM wire, along with several other sizes. More than 220 large terminations were completed and torqued, and multiple inspections were passed. All of this was done efficiently while the surrounding area was without power for 3 days and recovering from major storm damage.
